I just bought a 530CK and have couple of questions while I'm waiting for the service manual to arrive.

1. When starting the tractor I have to immediatly move the shifter from 'start' to any gear quickly or it will grind horribly when trying to shift.

2. If I start the tractor with the shuttle in nuetral, it grinds horribly going into forward or reverse. If I start it with the shuttle in gear it will grind when changing from forward to reverse.

Any idea what migth be causing these problems, I read the articles about flushing with diesel and refilling and that is my next chore but I am wondering if something worse is broken here.

Thanks,
Jason Weir

Jason, First thing about your 530CK shifting problem is to state which power transmission system your tractor has---a conventional dry clutch or the Case-o-matic torque converter/hydraulic clutch setup. From the description you give it sounds like you have c-o-m. Mine is like that when it first is started after sitting a few days. I now while the engine and loader pump are warming up, I move the lever to clutch lock up with the shifter in neutral and get some fluid to the clutch. I have ATF in it for fluid and it is kinda thin but ok for winter. Maybe this summer, I will replace it with the TCH type of fluid. Also, if you have c-o-m, there is a procedure to put a test gauge on the regulator and verify pressure. Mine had a busted spring in the regulator that caused low pressure and very poor performance. The IT book covers the testing. If you have the dry clutch, you just have a bad clutch. OK? Hang in there, a good working 530CK is a fun machine for occaisional using. I've gotten real attached to mine.

Thanks George, I do have the Case-O-Matic, it seems to me that the direct drive might be stuck engaged, locking the torque convertor. It has no effect on the tractor when moving the lever in or out of direct drive. I will flush the fluids this weekend. Anybody use All-Track (sp?) for the c-o-m?

Thanks again

Hi to Jason and all other c-o-m folks, Ok now that we are dealing with c-o-m, here goes. First, it is possible that thru abuse or metal failure that the converter is jammed into lockup or that the hydraulic for the clutch is unworkable. Let's try checking a few things. There is a gauge to the left of the main instrument cluster. If you are not sure that it is working, at the end where it goes to the pressure control assy, hook in a gauge that goes to 300psi. Start tractor leave in neutral and watch. It should have 100 to 125 psi, then push down on clutch, pressure should drop to 25-30. Be advised that the IT book says over fill of fluid can cause poor operation. If you get this before you change fluid, do the tests and verify that pressure. You can get the entire pressure control and regulator assy off and work it over. Nice of the Case engineers to have that on the outside of the unit so you can get to it. There is another check to verify pump output pressure, but if that is low so will be the gauge reading on the dash or your test gauge. Again, the IT book did a good job of covering the c-o-m. It is really a simple clutch system and looks rugged, and was used in some larger Case and other machines. As I said, mine had a busted spring in the regulator and that caused it to bearly be able to move the tractor around on flat ground and would not go up a slight hill or have any road speed. Go for it!! George S.

Well, hopefully, you got a good deal on this machine. A clutch is a bit of a job. The
previous owner probably didnt want to do it
and decided to sell instead... It could
be merely an adjustment but most likely the
previous owner already tried that.

the clutch might just need adjusting flush it first drain in a clean 5 gallon bucket and hear for any big peices of metal. and then flush out. fill with new and if that don't work adjust the clutch flushing it won't hurt any thing probly needs it any ways.
