I recently acquired a Case 300 tractor. I'm not sure of the exact year and so on but it has the gas engine, a wide front, loader, and square nose. (310B?) Hadn't been run in a few years. Got it running and took it for a ride. Main gear shift works fine but the lever for the tripl range wouldn't move out of the D position. I didn't try to force it for fear of damaging something. Is there something special you have to do to change ranges, other than engaging the foot clutch? Also, it didn't appear to have power steering. Is this model suppose to have power steering?

Hi Steve, Bought a 311b that had the same shift problem. Lift the cover, lube and slide the gears back and forth a couple times. There are two shifter forks installed in the cover that have couple of springs and a detent ball. Make sure they move freely. Reinstall cover with forks aligned in shift collars. Power steering was an option. There were two types for the 300 series. 1) hyd cylinder mounted on the front axle driving the tie rods 2) torque multiplier mounted in the steering wheel shaft just under the carb. Hyd pump will either be a belt drive pump mounted near the water pump or a gear drive pump mounted on the front right side of the engine (where magneto opening is on older models). Either receiver can be run off the tractor hydraulics if the pump is missing/shot. Joe

The direct drive gear slips inside one of the other drive gears basically creating a 1 to 1 gear box. Since the tractor has been sitting it is conceivable the direct gear may be slightly rusted to the other gear or the shaft. Pull the triple range shifting cover and have a look to make sure all the gears slide freely. It's not a difficult job, just make sure you get the shifting forks aligned correctly on re-assembly.

My father-in-law's 430 triple range is pretty stiff to shift, it may be really stiff if it has been sitting, and even stiffer if it has been a very long time since it has been used.

Most of these were fitted with Armstrong power steering.
