Hello - I have a 1969 Case 580 CK. The dipper, bucket, and loader operate smoothly and powerfully. The boom is powerful too, but is very jerky. The lever for the boom must be babied in order to accurately control movement of the boom without undue jerkiness and overtravel (at any engine speed). It is amost impossible to only lift or lower the boom a few inches without it trying to go a foot or more. I have operated other Case backhoes, and they are not overly sensitive to the controls like this one. The hydraulic oil filter has been replaced. I paid the big bucks for the 4" thick Case manual, parts manual, etc., but haven't been able to find a reference to this type of problem. The closest was a reference to a flow restrictor spool that is installed in one of the hydraulic lines for the boom. I ordered a new spool, replaced the old one, and the problem is still there. The hydraulic fluid is new as well. Thank you for any input.

Swap the hoses like John said. If the problem stays with the boom you have a problem in the hyd. cyl. Possibly the piston is loose on the piston rod.

"Swap" boom cyl hoses with dipper cyl hoses at control valve.(dipper lever operates boom & boom lever operates dipper)If boom operates smoothly on dipper valve, the problem is in the boom control valve.

Try checking out the clevis pins in the controls. These are some high wear items and can contribute to irratic control due to looseness. There used to be a restricter in the down circuit at the control valve fitting, I think that the fitting had to be removed to get at the restricter which help prevent the boom circuit from cavitation.
