I need a bigger tractor since i found some ground i could rent from a neighbor. I need a big tractor since this ground is a little steep. I farmer down teh road has a case 970 diesel with powershift for 5,500. I was looking in a traders guide and i saw a JD 4040 advertised for 7000. Both look pretty good, but im inexperienced at this stuff. Which should i get since i just want a comfortable tractor for tillage work.

That sounds cheap on that 4040 but if its in good shape it is worth it. I'm partial to Case tractors but, I would consider a couple of things before buying the Case. Make sure it has hydraulic brakes. In my opinion if your in the hills the deere will have better brakes. I don't like a powershift Case in hilly country. They dont hold back and can be dangerous if you don't know what your doing. I don't bale or mow with mine on steep ground. The 970 will out power the 4040 and probably be better on fuel. Don't get me wrong the 970 is an excellent tractor but not my choice for hill farming. Powershifts can be expensive. I put $1800 in to mine a few years back and that was at my employee discount of 20%. Man I miss that discount. The case will also have fewer leaks than the Deere.(from experience)

Good Luck!

don't use the power shift on hills. when i baled whith the 1070 with the power shift on hills i just stuck it in 3rd and ran right along.kinda scary going up hill the front end wanted to come up. but the power shift is great. on flats or on hills.

Look at the hours of both. If there is a tremendous difference go for the lower hours. If you are talking about steep ground you should get the one with a cab or John Deere also had the roll gard for protection. As one of the guys said the JD will use for fuel if you are working it. And as I spent quite a few hours on both I would opt for power shift if one of them has it. You'll love it in the hills. Both are about similar in power. Being partial to Case I would go for the 970 if they are in equal condition.

I don't have much experience with J.D.s, but I have a 970 Case as do a lot of other farmers around here. Mine is a tough tractor; good power good starting, handy to drive and still easy to get parts for. The J.D. I'm sure is a good tractor too, although Ive heard they are quite thirsty.

we have a 1070 with power shift. its a great tractor. you can get parts at a case Ih dealer. i think on the Jds the brakes are in the axle housing and the case are on the out side so the 970 brakes would be easier to replace. all the cases are under rated too. they are a powerful tractor. and it comes down to what you think of them whitch on you feel more comfotable on.
