Case 730 cooling system question

I have a Case 730 with an odd cooling system problem. The coolant was very oily and black; when I flushed the system, it took a long time (45 minutes) to get the coolant to run clear.

When I crank the engine, coolant pulses past the radiator cap, with each pulse corresponding to a cylinder strokes. The radiator cap is new, so the pulses likely exceed the 7 psi rating for the cap. The engine seems to run OK, and once it reaches operating temperature, the radiator cap stopped leaking, but resumed once I ran the RPM up.

I'm guessing this is head gasket or a related problem, but I thought I'd ask the forum if this is common and if there is something I should look for in particular.

If anybody has any suggestions or ideas, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

You have combustion going into the cooling system from either a cracked head - leaking head gasket or even up to a cracked sleeve. To find which cyl it is remove the water manifold and fan belts, start it and you will be able to see which cyl the problem is befor taking the engine apart.
