Carb problems

I have a '62 530. After using it for a while it keeps shutting off. I thought the fuel filter might be blocked, but the gas ran freely when I took off the fuel line. I put on a clear filter so I could watch what was happening. Gas runs freely when line is off the carb, but stops when I hook it back up. when I blow through the carb, or after it sits a while it will run again. Any Ideas would be appreciated.

Sometimes a worn needle and seat will stick in the closed position. I know the it would seem the needle is defying gravity and it looks like there would be no way it could hang up, but I have seen this in everything from British sports cars to outboard motors and tractors. It can and does happen and will drive you crazy trying to find the problem. New parts are included in the carb kits, usually $20 to $30. Good luck.

Robert-

I just had a similar problem on the rebuild of my "spare" carb. The needle stuck immediately after the first use.

This time I had been using the rebuild kit supplied directly from Zenith- and they did not provide a spring clip to connect the base of the needle to the bowl floats. The needle had nothing to pull it out of the valve if it decided to hang.

I wound up having to pull both the needle and seat and replace them with the ones out of a NAPA kit. This kit had a much larger "notch" on the needle and was supplied with a spring.

For the SC carb kits- I'd rate them as follows in order of completeness:

#1 - Tisco kit (includes the choke shaft)

#2 - The NAPA kit (doesn't include choke shaft)

#3 - Zenith kit (doesn't include choke shaft, doesn't include needle spring clip, doesn't include idle screw spring.)

Hi Bill,

I might have an idea. After taking my carb apart for the umpteenth time, I decided to be "smart" and double up on my inline filters.

I put one directly below the gas tank with the shut-off valve, and then put one directly in front of the carburetor fuel inlet.

Well- it didn't work out like I'd hoped. Luckily, I was using a clear filter and could see what the problem was:

The second filter was at the bottom of the loop in the fuel line, and the outlet side wound up being slightly higher than the inlet side. The level line of the gas that would fill up the filter wouldn't quite reach up to the outlet side of the filter... which explained why it kept fuel starving on me.

Try moving your filter uphill in the gravity loop. Worked for me. Hope this helps.
