The clutch on my 885 DB/Case was fine one moment then the next the pedal went almost all the way down before the clutch will disengage. I was scraping alongside my pond when it slid into the pond, and the water got up to brake/clutch pedal height. Next thing i know i smell hot clutch. The clutch pedal now goes almost all the way down before the clutch disengages and it still doesnt disengage the pto clutch. What could have happened ????

Hmmmmm mmm. Well I just ran it approx 3 hours using the front bucket. The clutch never slipped once but its still going down a little more than half travel before disengaging, the pto still isnt disengageing. The clutch never slipped, smelled or did anything odd, I may just run it awhile and see what happens. Any other opinions ???

I would speculate that the clutch got wet, clutch lining disolved, and no more clutch. I replace a lot of DB clutches when people steam clean these tractors and the moisture from the steam causes the clutch lining to soften and stick to the flywheel and pressure plate. I'm in KY, too (Versailles) and get Lex Joint and Clutch to rebuild them. Does a great job (about $450.00 on the last one) and uses the "good" lining materials. I usually charge $150.00 to put one in. We usually do 4 or 5 a year in the shop here at school (1/2 or more Case/DB).

David, I read an old posting of yours on Aol regarding clutches on a David Brown Model 885..I currently have a Model 885-1 and the clutch seems to be worn..Letting it out all the way, no longer engages unless I speed the engine...Is there an adjustment to this model to bring it back to use..J. I realize you are very concerned with your clutch, but we are mostly concerned with how you got your tractor out of the pond.

I just reached down hit the rear diff lock and drove it all the way across the pond(its a small pond about 100 feet across)and out the bank thats not very steep. thats when I started smeeling the burnt clutch smell and noticed it was disengageing properly

Sorry I'm talking without answering your question. It's just that around here (Kansas) you would not have done that because ponds always fill up with silt, and you would have needed something much bigger to pull you out.

If this happened today, you might be lucky tommorrow when it dries out maybe it will work ok again.

If you look on down the board a ways, you will see the DB expert, Elmer, is out for about a week.
