Right now this is mostly a research phase, but I’m trying to find the lightest, tightest turning, most powerful 4wd articulated tractor to run in a row crop configuration (ridge till). Preferably a used, 4000 hour model in good shape.

So far, my pick is the Case 4690. It looks like they can be found in the $10-20,000 range. I want to know any shortcomings, weakpoints, or just general comments on this tractor.

Intended uses are- pull a 12-16 row cultivator/planter combination, and also a 5-7 shank deep tillage tool.

Thanks for any insights you might have.

Phil

Resale is bargain cheap, as the Tenneco aggressive
marketing was.Built non-union in Racine, price
dumping put this 4690 beast in place of another
color. Our first Case, they came to us, anything
else was 15K more. During, and after warranty it
always had needs, and a lazy turbo(underpowered).
Was there a correct adjustment for the steering?
Handled more like a 4 wheel wagon, missing the
tongue. A year or two after replacing with a
Steiger, the engine failed, bigtime. The owners
going new on engine, dropped about 16K into that
downer, glad to duck that bill to carry on with a
marginal tractor. Surely, you can do better!
Good luck.

I'll find out this week were the leak in the engine comes from. Where to stop and quit throwing good money after bad??? I believe a very big load coupled with the jerk shifting powershift will in time twist the shafts off as well as take out u-joints plantery gears, etc. As I said the 1470 was the only good 4-wheeler the orginal Case company had.

I have a 1980 4690. I bought at a sale for what I thought was a bargin 15000. wrong.. the previous owner took lousy care. Valve job,3000 trans valve 1200 reverse stub axles in wheels 600 and now antifreeze in the engine oil. and it does not have the power it's rated at.. oh yes it needs a new turbo. Otherwise a great tractor. yey the crab and four wheel steer have a mind of its own. before this tractor I had a 1470 (the best tractor ever made),[disappointment]

My nephew had one and the crab steer had a mind of it's own. Then a shaft in the tranny twisted in two and was going to cost $3000 to repair so he sold it. Good pulling tractor when it ran. My 2 cents.
