My 401 diesel will no longer shut off when I push the throttle lever all the way up. It just idles very low and I have to stall it to shut it down. Where can I adjust this problem? Thanks

Try holding the throttle arm on the injector pump all the way back and see if this shuts off the tractor, if so, you need to adjust the throttle linkage. There is a threaded adjustment under the fuel tank on the right side of the tractor. Hope this helps.

Hey PAT T thanks por the follow up on my post below witch way should you shut a 400 diesel off by slowing the throtle all the way down and let it die or slow it down then open the presure control arm and let it spin down on its own ? ive heard people say that if you idle it to low that it will run (or can) run backwards and mess things up..thanks sHan..... ....

I've always just shut the throttle down and let her spin to a stop. I have had the same low speed run talked about, but usually if I close the throttle with a brisk motion, it shuts off fine. The book says not to use the decompressor lever routinely to shut off tractor, could damage exhaust valves (no problem in an emergency, such as governor failure, etc). It amazes me to think how this was the first diesel engine Case built, and how good they got it right off the bat. My 400 runs like the day it was new, and we use it on the farm every year. Hope you all enjoy yours as much.

Recently had the same problem on my 401. The fix was a new throttle return spring. The lever on the steering column is not directly connected to the linkage...that is, it will raise the throttle directly, but not lower it. There is a hook on the linkage that will not let you manually close the throttle, and relies on the spring. If you have the footfeed option, the weight of the pedal can eventually stretch the spring. Try cutting a link off the spring and reattaching it. I actually had a spring break and had to replace it. I have not had any problems with the engine running backwards.
