Hello, Looking at replacing my aging iron. Been looking at Case 485/495 or Case 585/595. I have never owned a Case but these tractors seem to be good value for the money. I was wondering if any of you have any experience with these machines? Any pitfalls or weaknesses? Also what is the difference between the *85 and *95 series? I will be using the tractor for taking care of 14 acres, mowing bush hog and helping neighbor with haying. Is the 500 series more tractor than I need? I have been using a 1950's Allis but I think I should retire this machine. Thanks in advance for your feedback.

Thanks for the useful information guys. One last question, what were the standard tire sizes for the 485/95 585/95, 28", 30" or what?

Thanks again,
Ron

The rears could be had in 18,24,26,28" dia. with the widths varying as much. These were sold many ways out here as utility, low rider(orchard), and row crop. There was also a Tobaco version sold.

Its been a while but I think the major difference between the 85 and 95 series was an update in the hydraulics and a small change in the sheet metal. When I was at a dealership in the late 80's - early 90's, these units made up 85% of the units sold with the 585/595 selling more due to the extra 9 hp. The biggest problem with these units like the rest of the 385-895 units were with the hydraulics and as a parts manager I used to hate them for its very hard to show a profit in a parts department selling o-ring kits under warranty or customer sales. At the dealership, there was some concern with the clutches but it was learned early on with the 74 series to opt for the HD clutch, which is about the only clutch you will find on the units out here in the Fresno area unless the unit came in from a different area.

I have a 585 that I have been happy with. I am a weekend warrior with 30 acres and it does everything I need very well. Mine has the swept back front axle, which makes it very manuverable for that size tractor. Like one of the other guys said, great engine. Always starts quickly, very easy on fuel.

The tractors are actually a continuation of the IH 74 series utility tractors. The 95 series will have the most updates.

The biggest weak point is the clutch. If it has 4WD they don't stand up too well. Around here if a farmer is using one in a silage pile the clutch will last from 600 to 1100 hours. Great engine though. If the 500 series tractor is the same price as the 400 series you may as well have the little extra horsepower.
