I am nearing the end of the cleaning process on my 49 Case SC. I would like to remove the gearshift lever without pulling the transmission cover. Is that possible and practical?
A second question does the belt drive pulley need a puller to get it off?
The manual was not clear on these two questions.
Thanks

Randy, the gearshift lever will come off. Just take out the two bolts that are on the flange, at the base of the lever. You will need to have the stick in the same gear position going in, as it was when you took it out. Just put it in neutral coming apart & going together.
The belt pulley is on a tapered shaft & may be tough to get off. Apply some pressure to the back of it, (pry on it with a 2x4) and at the same time, smack the shaft (inward) & it may loosen. Good idea to use a punch as not to hurt the threads. A dull, heavy center punch would work well. It will keep you in the middle of the shaft. Maybe a big puller will work, be careful not to pull so hard as to bend the pulley. A little heat from a torch, aimed at the center hub, (while prying) may work too. Good luck.

Bruce,

Thanks for the wisdom. I will give the pulley a shot but with the caution you suggested.

Thanks again.
Randy
