I will be looking at a "for sale" Case 12-20 cross motor in several weeks. I have not seen pictures of it so I am expecting anything. I have restored a number of semi-rare JD's from the main case up but don't know much about these Case tractors. What should I look for? It is a western tractor and is definitely stuck. What is availability of pistons and other engine parts such as camshaft, valves, gears? What is the correct carb and mag? Does anyone repro the complex manifold? Is it a wet sleeve engine? Do the main and conn rod bearings have shims for adjustment similar to the Deeres? Any help would be much appreciated!

The 12-20 is a highly sought after crossmotor, very collectable. Original parts are hard to come by but most internals are overengineered and salvagable. Don L told me repro manifolds are available for $1,400!!! Original carb is a Kingston L-3, Mag is a Bosch. Wet sleeven engine, not sure if the bearings are shimmed (babbit I believe). The valve lifters are known to freeze up (currently where I'm at with mine). Look for an original air washer in good shape. Check for grease cups instead of zerks. Inspection plates in front of seat will tell you what kind of shape the crank, con-rods are in. Lift valve cover and see if the valve train, push-rods are in good shape. Don't force it or risk loosing the cam. Sliding collar on clutch known to stick. Broken ears on manifold common but fixable.

Holler back if you've got more questions. There are manuals available and a necessity....

I have a 1928 12-20, that I have rebuilt the engine, made new fenders, hood, air washer and put in a new rad core. It starts and runs great. It is not painted. Any idea what it might be worth.
