I have a case 1290 and lately it has been acting strangely. The other day we worked it real hard and it did'nt smoke a bit.The next day we did the same thing and it smoked like a locomotive and burned a quart of oil. The rest of the week it did fine, but on saturday it started it again.Does anybody know whats wrong with it?

I have never come across a problem exactly like that, however with low sulphur fuel creating alot of problems perhaps your metering valve stuck open when engine was under full load and kept pouring the fuel to it. I have seen them do the oposite when looking for full fuel and the metering valve stayed shut down. If you had a full fuel condition maybe due to the fuel wash in the cylinders it was enough to make oil consumption happen. Look for Howes diesel lubricant conditioner. I have cured quite a few problems with it. It does not have to be Howes but keep using it when you get it. Alot of pump problems today are due to low sulphur fuel.
