I went to look at the 830 that I posted about last week and the salesman says that the timing gears in the tractor are bad and need to be replaced they are selling it as is, my question is how hard is it to replace the gears on this tractor. They've also lowered their price to $1600 so I am very interested because the price is right.

I think I would have to agree with Tom. If the timing gears are bad, it may have a lot more problems. That seems high for one with a known problem and possibly some unknown ones. There is a real good barometer - 831 on ebay right now. It ends soon, watch it and get a good indicator of what these sell for.

If you get into the timing gears, the rest of the engine is probably quite worn. Timing gears usually last a long time. This is a hard call to make. You may only have to spend several hundred dollars to make it go again. You may get into several thousand to make it go. No telling how the clutch on back to the rear end is.
If you need a good tractor now without a lot of work you might want to keep looking.
