I have a chance to buy a Case 530 backhoe in good shape except for a loud metalic rap in the diesel engine. The seller said that he was told that it was a collapsed valve lifter and that it was intermitent. Is that possible? Is it more likely that it is bearing noise? Is that common in this engine?
Seller said that it has been that way for as long as he has owned it as well as the previous owner. Hmmmmm m. Any advise? OH yes 1966 in otherwise in good condition for $4000. Is this a good buy? Ken

Well, something new here. That engine has solid tappets, also called cam follower and valve lifters. Sure would be hard to have one of them collapse!!!! If the pivot joints on the loader and hoe are not all hogged out and the bushings in the frames damaged, buy that rig now. I bought a gas 530 with a bad engine but good pivots and boy am I happy. Engines can be rebuilt but don't even think of trying to redo trashed pin bushings. I had to put new pins in the hoe and one pair of bushings. Lots of the 188 Case diesel engines out there and you can get parts. Play kinda dumb and make a deal on that one. May just be a bad injector, especially if it does run. Let us know how you make out.

it could also be a connecting rod or it could have bad rings and the piston could be slapping the cylinder wall

Price sounds high if it really has a problem. I just sold mine with no real problems for $6000
