I have a 1968 580CK, 188 diesel, with a power shuttle.
Symptoms: I have to allow the tractor to warm up about 5 minutes in the summer, and 10 - 15 minutes in the winter before it will move. Before it warms up I can shift out of “S” to any gear without using the clutch. Once it warms up, I have to use the clutch and allow the clutch pressure gauge to drop of the gears will grind. The clutch pressure is always in the green before and after warm-up. Also, when it is warmed up it won’t move in 4th gear unless you are going downhill or on a flat surface. To go up hill with a heavy load in first the engine has to be at a very high RPM to move.
I have changed the transmission oil and filter. Question:
How can I determine if the problem is the clutch pack, torque converter, or something else.

check your converter pressure. it should be between 30 to 40 psi at all rpm's. the check port is right next to the overheat switch on the converter pressure regulator next to the foward reverse valve body. it is not the port that already has the pressure tube on it. its the one on top to the left and alittle behind. without the proper pressure the torque converter is starving and slipping maybe due to worn seals, there are 4 intenal and worn journals to the converter mounting. I had this problem and rebuilt the drive line. works perfect now. no more waiting for the thing to warm up. start the tractor and it goes. good luck and you need the manuals.

Sounds like your clutch is slipping.
