Hi all, Levi is my name, I'm found over at the Ford 9N,2N,8N most every day. But today I bought a pretty good ole 52 VAC ser #56507xx and I've got a problem with the steering, I checked the archives and found that they are a hard steering tractor, but I can't turn the steering wheel to the right at all now, I was really stiff just getting it on my trailer and when I got it home I was gonna drive it around a little to see if it would loosin up but it only got harder to the point of not turning at all, I greased the heck out of all the front zerks but that didn't help, I found the one in the very front under the radiator and put a ton of grease in there also. What would you recomend as my next step in getting this solved?? Thanks Guys!!

Well I decided to tear into it and see what I could find. I disconected the steering shaft up behind the radiator and it was still very hard to turn the steering wheel. At that point I discovered the shaft from the steering wheel down was binding in the colume inside that cast piece behind the dash. After greasing the nipple on that cast piece it loosened up a little...very little. If I pull the steering wheel, that shaft will pull out from the bottom right??? and is there a bushing in the cast piece??

Parts book shows a bussing in end of upper part of tube. None in cast piece. Also check u joints for binding. Knocking the roll pin out of the yoke of the front u joint can isolate this.

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. I took the steering wheel off and pulled the shaft down and out and cleaned out the tube it goes through, I took a SOS pad on the end of a coat hanger and got it nice and clean. put it back together greased it up and now it steers GREAT...Now its time for a tune up...LOL...Thanks again

Levi congrats on the case. I have two vas's and they have the same steering as your tractor. You won't like the process of freeing them up. First of all you have front weights on your tractor. This doesn't help for right now. Next is the plate that has the zerk on it is the bearing tension plate. It has shimes behind it to keep from crushing the bearing and shaft. I found out when I did my tractors I had to take the whole steering assembly out to free them up. This means taking off the radiator and pulling the steering shaft off the back side of front housing. Inside the housing unit it was packed so tight with grease and had no where to go. Also where the shaft come out of the unit between the rust and the old caked grease I could hardly get the short shaft out. Trying to find a new bearing isn't easy either. You might want to look at archieves here because some here had found them like for a studebaker front wheel. I found mine an t a local bearing dealer cost $80 to replace. Hope this helps. I do have a parts catalog so if you need some help feel free to contact me.

Hi Levi, Looks like a nice find. One of the first things I would do is unhook the drag link to see ware the problem is out on the thrust bearings on the spindles, or in the steering assembly in the nose if the tractor like Jim mentioned. As fare as manuals go I prefer the ones from the case dealer. They cost more but are mush more detailed.

Hi Levi,

Welcome to our neck of the woods. I saw the picture that you posted of the Case VAC and the blade over on the "N" board. I'd say did very all right for the price you paid.

I'm sorry- I have about zero experience with the VAC model... but they are very popular tractors and I'm sure someone here has either got one or has a service manual for one. Steve Staysko has got a '54 VAC-14 under restoration, maybe he'll weigh in on your problem.

Good luck- and be careful... I'd hate for you to get orange (Flambeau) paint in your veins like the rest of us!

thanks Mike, I like all kinds of tractors, I've had Deere,Oliver and I still have a Farmall Cub, a 45 2N and a 51 8N, so the Case will be a nice addition to my collection, I just wish I could drive it around, it needs some use because it been sitting for 2+ years....now how do I fix the Steering problem, I'm going to need the manuals are there any good on-line sources, Sorry...to many questions!
