I have a Case D (1939)S/N D4302745 about to be restored. The more I search for info...the less I seem to find. I hope someone can put me right.

Was the C engine block used in the first D production run..and if so...what was the difference?

Did the standard D have a turning brake? Mine hasn't. Someone told me the D without a turning brake was known as a DH...is this correct? If not...what was a DH?

Is there anywhere I can find basic D specifications for my serial number..such as engine size, HP, compression ratio,RPM, max speed, standard features, options tyre sizes etc.

Were all D's designed to run on Kero?...mine has 2 tanks with a change-over tap protruding from the tanks below left of steering wheel.

It has been suggested that should one want to run on Kero (which I probably wont..except occasionally at rallys)one must use Aviation jet fuel (don't laugh)as the readilly available'heating/lighting'kero from the Gas station is less volitile and considerably down in octane rating compared to the 'old power Kero' that used to be available. Any comments on this?

Best regards,
David Bird (Australia)

The two books you should have are "150 Years Of J.I.Case" by C.H.Wendell. This book has a lot of information about the D series. Plus a lot of information on the rest of Case equipment. Another one you should get is a I&T manual for this tractor. It will have all the specifications you need.

Thanks for your reply Larry. BTW...I was misinformed re Aviation grade Kero for tractor use...talking to Shell tech staff they advise that Av grade kero is unsuitable as the octane rating is very low. They looked up the specifications for the old power-kero for internal combustion engines (no longer available in Australia))and advise that the octane rating was 50. They also advised to get 'lighting' kero to 50..add 1 part ULP 94 octane to 3 parts kero. Has anyone any experience with 'modified' kero for tractor use?

Can anyone advise me of the correct rear tyre size for my CASE D? The ones fitted are 13-50-24. I think this means that the rim width is 13 1/2" x 24" dia. Can I go to 13" ? (about $100 cheaper)

Regards, David
