Well, we've been all over looking for ways to fix the main bearing cap/crank and the situation with the thrust bearing. No luck. So now, it looks like the crank is to be pulled and the cap and crank will be fixed as Elmer had his done. In the process, the rest of the engine will be done also (since it will already be out of the tractor).

Elmer, do you know if the tractor has to be split to remove the engine on the 885G? There is a large cover like thing that sits over the rear of the engine and top of the tranny area. Just looking at it, it looks possible to remove the cover and perhaps detach the engine without splitting the tractor.

Yes you can remove the engine without splitting it, but to do that you have to remove the pto housing and pull the pto drive shaft out. It is just as easy to split the tractor. If my memory serves me correctly there are 4 bolts inside the clutch housing that you can access through the inspection hole. There is also a bolt inside the crank case just ahead of the oil pump that has to be removed to lift the engine.

Thanks Elmer. You've been a great help.

At this point, I have decided I am going to pay Mike some more money for the tractor and the work. Mike has been insisting all along that the repairs were not going to cost me anymore money, but that, I think, was under the premise it wasn't going to be major work. Since this is going to end up being an engine rebuild, it seems to me it is only fair that Mike not have to eat the total cost. Insisting he do the engine rebuild at no cost to me just isn't the right thing to do.

You have a big heart. It is hard to tell when you take a tractor in expect to turn it over and make a profit. That's what being in business is all about. Then you end up with a big can of worms!!!Their are people in this world who would stick him with the motor job. I did the same thing to myself. Bought an old 880 that seemed to run great. When i brought it home and put it to work it developed problems. Had to replace all three pistons and now it works great. Luckily i had not paid a whole lot for it and was able to do the work myself. Makes a great grass cutting tractor.

Grass cutting is going to be the primary function for the 885 :-) I suppose I could go find something else (Mike hasn't cashed the check I've given him, he said he won't until I am satisfied with the tractor), but I've been looking around and not too impressed with what I've found in the local area.

My only requirements are power steering, two-stage clutch and enough HP to drive a 6ft shredder decently. Only things I can find around here either cost too much or they are beat to death.

Besides, I just like this little 885G. I can't explain it, I just like it. It's the perfect size, has all the "features" I want and when it's all done it will be practically new mechanically. Even with the added costs I'm about to incur, I doubt I could find anyhting comparable here for the same money. Now I just have to be patient and wait for the machine shop to do its magic ;-)

And of course, watch the grass grow even more (gettin deep! it's over my head in some places!)

I use my 880 to cut my lawn. I have a 6 foot finishing mower. The nice part about the David Brown tractor is the 2 speed pto. Your 885 will have it too. With the pto in high range with the engine at 1100 rpm it cuts grass with out all the engine noise and great fuel efficiency. But your brush hog will need a little more power, so you will have to put it in low range at 1800 engine rpm. I would have to check, but i think i have an operators manual hee for the 885G.

Thanks Elmer, but I already have an operators manual :-) I just bought one about a week ago. I also got a service manual, but it turns out to be the manual for the Case 885 (a completely different machine). Thought it was supposed to be for the DB 885. Gotta send it back.

After looking some more I see they want like $129 for the DB 885 service manual (the CHEAP one!)...oooff...don't think I want to spend that much for one. Any major work isn't going to be done by me anyway.
