I can't find a thermostat for my Case 500 diesel. The Case IH dealer says none are listed. My book lists part number 09805AB. Any ideas for finding one? Thanks for any help, PK.

Our 500 Diesel did not have a thermostat when we bought it. Since we still work it, we wanted one put in. My boss and I made an adapter plate to hold a thermostat out of a 190 Allis-Chalmers. We also braized a washer in the bypass. This restricted it so the thermostat would work more effeciently. I think we left a 3/8" opening. We were able to use all of the stock gaskets. Sorry I don't have any pictures. If you have a bit of ingenuity, you can figure something out. Good luck!

Kelly, If that is the same thermostat that cont'l J series uses ,also IH D 282 ,and some Hercules , the number for both thompson and napa is 155.

The OEM part is a strange contraption. You have already found that it is also big. An o ring was used in the housing to seal it, without the o ring, water bypasses it. If Don can't find you one, I think you could fabricate an adapter plate that holds one of the new automotive thermostats. The o ring is still available, use it to seal around the adapter. It has been a few months since I looked at mine (I was lucky enough to have the thermostat but no o ring), but I believe this could be done pretty easily.
Another alternative is to hit the salvagers.
