Hey! I'm wondering if anybody out there knows where I can get NOS or reproduction/identical valves for a Case Model L tractor, circa 1929. I just bought it, and while most of it is in decent shape, the valves as a whole are pretty sad. Do LA valves work in the L? Also, what is the horsepower of this tractor? What was it rated to pull? Any other information/etc. will be very welcome! ;o)

Thanks!

A buddy of mine bought one for 250 bucks. He had the head reworked and bought another exhaust manifold. Still a long way to go before it is finished. Has steel wheels all the way around now and is about ready to get it started.

Has anyone ever started one with the belt pto????
Are they hard to start with the crank?

All the old Case tractors eg C,L,D,LA are easy to start with the crank IF tuned properly. Got to get the timing right, magneto in good shape, mixture right.

If all those things are OK it generally takes one crank pull to suck the mixture in. It should fire and start on the next pull.

I have started them with the belt pulley and using the PTO when they have not been used for some time, or not tuned properly

I live in cooler country and an L takes 3 pulls up here. 2 with the choke on and one more to go!
They are very easy to crank with a good mag. Timing is important so it won't backfire. I knew a fella that hated cranking his and would wrap a rope around the pulley and hook it to his vehicle - start it rip cord style.

yeah, i love to hear when someone is getting another old L ready to bark again. i just got done plowing some dark loam soil with our '29 L. LA heads are the same as L heads. you may even be able to just find another complete head. we have a few extra complete heads but they pretty heavy and expensive to ship. case made 3,240 L from 1929-40. Horsepower is in the fifties range depending on the engine bore, compression of head (there were at least three different heads), and tire size. we pull 3 and 4 16" plows with them out here in oregon so they pulled 4 easily in the sandpile midwest. my family loves L's and still farms with two of them so if there is any thing else you need to know about size or capacity or originality or interchangability or performence, just let me know. thehickdaddy@hotmail.com
