I just picked up a Case S series, standard tractor. Unfortunatly the serial number tag is gone. I think its an SI or SO because it has a short steering column, short air stack and used to have side exhaust. Does anyone know a way to tell for sure? Maybe the year also?

Sounds more like an SO. The serial no. is stamped on the block flange behind the air cleaner. The SI uses the regular steering column, the upright exhaust and standard air cleaner, of course there are exceptions to all these items. The SO will have the hand clutch, as far as I know all the SI's are foot clutch. The serial number (if the engine hasn't been changed) will have the model ID with it.

a few ways to tell if it is an so, if it has not been altered that is. #1 it's headlights, if it has any, should be mounted at the bottom sides of the radiator, not near the top. #2 it should have steering brakes or differential brakes, one one each side of the trans. #3 1st gear should be about 1/3 slower than a normal s. #4 it should either have a power take off shaft or at least have a plate with four bolts on the back of the trans that can be removed to install a pto
if it is a si it may have a foot clutch where as other s series had hand, it should not have a loovered cast iron grill but just have a light screen across the radiator. if you look across the front of a si the front is flat, including the top radiator tank. hope that helps.
