I am still tinkering with the old 900 which sat out for 23 years resting. Last time I reported was when I got it running but it was spewing liquid out the exhaust and making a putting sound. Someone on this board( I forgot who) said it might be valve problems. Well, you were exactly right. I took the covers and rocker arms off and one of the valves is stuck tighter than an ax handle wedge. When it started it, it had bent the push rod. My plan now is to just remove the one head and have valve work done ,leave the other two alone and see how it runs. Is this a good plan or should I do the other heads also? Can the push rod be straightened? Also does anyone know if the head gaskets comes in a set of 3 or can I buy just One? Thanks.

I am the one who said it my be valve problems. Some people claim they can straighten push rods, but it is best to replace them. Try a salvage yard or your local Case dealership. You can also take one of the pushrods that is not bent to machine shop and they can make you a new one. Good luck!

When you get to the one head you have done 3/4 of the work not 1/3. You have to replace all the manifold's (exhaust, intake and water) gaskets, and than if it doesn't work and shows more head trouble all that work will have to be done over... Take off and have all the heads reworked (valves reseated or replaced , ck for worn valve guides and for cracks. Ck. springs for right tension. On a 900D have the powercells cleaned, and injectors cleaned and ck'ed. If this tractor has not been well maintained the injection pump will probably be overhauled. At the same time you can ck. the condition of all the cyl. walls for wear. If it shows very much taper wear or scoring , rering or new sleves and pistons. if you just rering you should pull the sleves and put in new o-rings. You should than also ck. the crank and put in new bearings. The choice is yours..

Unless you are willing to spend big money - just
free the valve - put in a new push rod and give
it a try. Many times even stuck engines that
can be freed up without removing heads - run
quit well when run for awhile.

best,

Thanks Jim, that is probably good sound advice. I Believe this is a sound old tractor, and worth going all the way with engine repairs. The transmission and rear end sound real quiet and the tin is restorable to good shape. I was thinking about pulling it if I get it in good enough shape. I hear that you can turn that big Bosch inline injector pump up some and get a lot of real tourque power out of them.

Double check your head numbers before ordering head gaskets. Not sure on the 900's but the 500's could have two different numbers which reguire different gaskets. Not sure if the 6320A head would fit on the 900. I know the A6320A will fit the 500. Parts book shows A20154 for a valve grind gasket kit for the 900.
