Sorry for my stupid question but was wondering is the 504 a case desighned engine or was it by some one else. I know there were other engine manufactures for latter case tractors. Also did these engines have any problems with them?

Yes the 504 is a true case eng. the early blocks did not have piston cooling jets in them and will not take high HP, that was changed in late 1973

Someone else may give you a more definite answer but I beleive that the 504 was a "true" JI Case. That particular block cast has been used in the 451 and 504 with different sleeves for many years, at least back to the 1030 series. It's not an IH and not a David Brown as it predates Case's purchase of both. The heads bear a remarkable resemblence to Cummins but I've never heard that Case bought the 504 from anyone.
