The shifter seems to be totally diconnected inside the transmission. Tried to remove the shifter cover for repair but it will only come up slightly. I don't want to damage anything by prying too hard. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Tom - I have a 1971 diesel 580ck. Same thing happened to me - I shifted it too quickly one day and the thing was left stuck in 1st gear, and I couldn't shift it at all. I took off the cover and it would only come up slightly, and after considerable time and aggravation, I applied more and more pressure to it (prying up) and noticed that one of the steel slide bars in the center had slid backward and under the rear edge of the opening. This was keeping it from coming off. I continued to pry upward and slide, and eventually worked the cover off. I never figured out why the pin/slide bar had done what it did, but I put it back in center position, looked at all the gears in the tranny (all looked fine), and slid the fork (attached to the cover) down in the tranny. Everything lined up fine, and it shifts okay now, but not as good as originally - it is like I bent something slightly. As thinking about this, I took the cover back off and studied it, and noticed that the fork looked like I may have bent it slightly (prying). I wasn't sure, so I reassembled again and reinstalled. Same problem, but it is usable. However, after several hours of pushing dirt, I heard some some grinding once in the box, akin to the fork holding it in one gear but sliding it slightly into another. Not a consistent problem but I do plan to take cover off and bend fork back to where I think it's straight. Other than that, I've never had a problem, and this machine is a real workhorse. I've owned it 13 months, plus or minus, and probably put 200 hours on it with little trouble (broken steering hoses from catching tree branches I pushed over), but that's about it. She's a good one. Starts every time in cold temps (40s), but one thing I've noticed is that it always runs kinda cool - like 140-160 Farenh (new gauge, too). I did put on a new waterpump, new thrmostat and flushed about 10 pounds of dirt out of the radiator and engine. She also smokes slightly - does not burn a drop of oil, though (diesel smoke, some blue, some black). I've pulled out injectors, cleaned them, everything looks good, but I suspect I could use a new set of injectors to give it top performance, although it'll push about anything - an impressive machine. I've got most of my work done now so she's just sitting pretty much, now. Hope that helps, Chuck in South Carolina
