Just got a "new" Case 801B diesel. Hasn't been run for who knows how long. I got the engine running. but the tranny is bad. Does anyone know the fix for low oil pressure at the test point on the converter/direct drive unit on the left side of the trans case? It should be 55+ lbs., it's only 25 lbs. Other pressures are ok. I think this is the converer pressure.
With engine off, shift lever will lock in what I think is low. It must be forced out. With engine running, any gear grinds and must be forced in. I'm not sure where all 8 gears are, but once in gear, it responds to the 'Powr-Clutch' and direct drive lever ok.
The manual says "see Dealer" for problems. The dealer probably hasn't seen one of these problems for 25-30 years. Thanks, John

John,
It's possible the case-o-matic pump is getting worn, but I would change the case-o-matic oil and clean or replace the filter before I did anything else. Typically the wosrt thing that happens to the case-o-matic system is the direct drive clutch system goes out, and if that is still working there proabably isn't too much wrong. As for the shifting, some grinding is to be expected and a thorough warm up and idling the engine down as far as you can before shifting should help. The shifting pattern has 2 nuetral slots with 4 gears in each slot.

BLR & others: The converter pressure is 25-30 psi , but I was probably only at 700-800 rpm. I took the round cover off the tranny oil filter and removed the filter to get at the converter regulator valve assembly. The filter was covered with gunk and there was no O rings seals present. I pulled the plunger out (it was not stuck) and found it heavily scratched. It looks like somebody took a file to it ??? The oil is pretty black. Pressure at the filter test point is at the high limit, probably due to the clogged filter. A lube oil dealer did some checking and said the replacement for 10W MS-DG is Citgo Tractor Hydraulic Fluid Red. The engine won't idle (well it did one time for about 30 seconds), so I guess that's the next fix. The manual shows a shift gate plate about 1/2 way up on the shift lever; mine is missing. Thanks to all for the help. John

I have an 801B Gas. From your description, it doesn't sound like anything is wrong with the tractor. There is no positive disconnect from the engine on this tractor. To get it in gear, the tractor must be warmed up enough to run at low idle. Even then, it will appear to grind the gears. Generally, it is easier to get in gear in the lower gears. Once in gear, it will shift with less noise if you can get to the next gear quickly. I would say that if you have the direct drive working, you are home free. The oil and filter change for the transmission is very important.
Good luck.

John if your tractor has pulling power through the converter I would not do anything with it until I changed the oil in it. Then use it and get it warmed up. If you do not know how they are supposed to work try to find a book and read. The grinding is common in most c-o-s after they are well used. I have four C-o-s tractors and none of them operate exactly the same. As long as it moves under a full load I would use it.l Lewt us know what happens
