Two questions from this picture at the Link below. This is the first picture I have seen showing the storage location of the crank handle on the SC. The tracto was recently posted on ebay.
1. Is that a sheet metal clip that holds it to the bottom of the seat?
2. I noticed the choke knob is painted black. Is that correct?

Look closely at the picture. There are actually two pieces which hold the crank, a metal piece which pivots below, and a spring clip on top. I do not know what the correct color is for the choke knob.

Mike- that choke knob is black with a silver 'C' in the middle, it's not a cable but a rod with the knob on the end- at least thats the way it is on my 41 SC. morgan

Hey Morgan,

Thanks for the info. I just picked up a '45 SC, and it's got this "C" knob on it as you describe. Also black with a silver "C".

Great to know that it's original- I'll be keeping my eye out for more for the other tractors.

Does anyone have a replacement source for those Case light switches for the SCs and DCs?

Regards, -Schotte

Hi Randy,

To answer your question about the crank handle storage- There is a sheet metal tab below the channel for the seat pan, but this is just part of what holds the crank.

There is a wire spring clip (#05945AB-spring) mounted above the sheet metal tab (#07148AB-bracket), and the crank clips between the tab and the spring.

There's an illustration in Peter Letorneau's Classic Case Tractors book that shows this- but I can't remember if you can see the clip in the drawing or not.

I had my tractor for over 15 years before I knew that this is where the crank stored! It was the illustration in that book that led to the A-HA! experience. Luckily, I had kept the crank safe all those years and was able to snap it back into place on the tractor.

I have no idea about your choke question, as my knobs have long since been replaced. I do know that on the earlier tractors- a knob wasn't used- it was just a metal choke linkage rod that ran through the hole in the dashboard. That's why the choke shaft on the carburetor has those large holes in the cast iron lever.

Good luck, -Schotte

Mike thanks for the reply. I had often wondered what the steel loop on the side of the seat was used for and like you, until I saw the picture I had no idea. I suspect the clip on my tractor has gone long ago. My Uncle said many years ago he was plowing and the crank handle was lost in the field. He had never said it was mounted under the seat and with that seat bracket gone I would assume everything feel off at once.
Does it look like it could be hand made?
You do not happen to have a picture of it do you?

Thanks so much.
Randy

Hey Randy,

I have about 10 CD-roms of tractor photos that I've taken of my SCs and DC-3. I went through them this morning before I replied to your note... but I didn't have a closeup of the clip.

The only pic that I had showing that area it was hiding behind the SMV sign!

I can take a digital pic for you, but it will probably be next week before I get out to where the tractors are.

Thanks for the web link- I'd never seen that one before. There aren't ever enough Case tractor pictures on the web to make me happy!

-Schotte
(so... did you ever plow up the crank, or are you missing it, too?)

Mike, Pat said he had one. If that does not turn out I will email you.
Thanks for the help.
