I bought a 500 Case tractor a year ago and it will not start unless you give it a shot of starting fluid. The engine is very strong and appears to be in good shape - it does not smoke and responds well when throttling. I have changed all the fuel filters, and checked the fuel pressure as described in the Case Dealer Service Manual, and it is perfect. Can anyone give me any ideas why this engine will not start on it's own? I really think that engine is in good shape, and is not "worn out". Can the "Power Cells" cause this kind of problem? If so, where can I find the specialty tools to remove and replace the Power Cells? If anyone has any experienced this similar problem, or knows the fix, please send me a note!!

Thanks,
Tim Jones

the first thing i would check is the compression, if your sure it getting fuel, if it just smokes at cranking speed with out ether then there is not enought heat from compression to light all the fuel, if it doesn't even smoke then it must be a week pump or stiff injectors, feel free to email me i may be able to find more information if i had more details

Is it a 500 (first case diesel, big six cylinder that looks exactly like a LA with two more cylinders) or a 500B (little two tone tractor)
If it is the first you have to use the decompression lever if the engine is not worn out. You are probably aware of this but just in case, it is the little lerver to the right. It lets the engine spin over then you close it and it starts.

Some of the old Case tractors wll start a lot better if you twist that injector pump just a small amount. Do not over do it or you will loose power and mess up the fuel consumption. You may have to try both ways. I have a 500 and 900 that both start very well down to 10 degrees without starting fluid. I also have an 830 that needs fluid at 45 degrees.

Jerry,

Could you give me some instructions on how to "twist" my injector pump? Where is this adjustment located? I want to be sure I am adjusting the right thing, and not accidentally screwing up the wrong thing! I appreciate any help that you can offer.

Thanks, Tim Jones

Tim,

I have 3 old Cases with the energy cell engines. If it is below 40*F, then you will probably need to give a sniff of ether to get it started. Ours will start below that, but you have to crank on them a long time before they take off. How cold is it when you are starting the engine? As for powercel removal, you can do it with the heads on the engine. Remove the injectors and the plugs covering the energy cells. Once the caps or plugs over the energy cell has been removed you need to take a 18" 3/8" diameter steel rod and round one end of it. Then run it throught the injector bore over to the energy cell. You can GENTLY drive the energy cells out. Make sure to realighn them wiht the dowl pins when you reinstall them. The key to all of this is be VERY clean and take your time. It is not complicated, but can be goofed if you are in a hurry. Also, while the injectors are out, take them to a shop and have the pop off pressure and spary pattern checked. If the pop off pressure is off, it can be adjusted. If the spray pattern is poor or the injector drips, then new tips are needed. They are about $50 each. E-mail me if you need any more help.
