We use 1070 all the time for round baling and square baling. Usually in 3rd 2nd or 3rd 3rd on round baler. Only had one out of 7 1070 have a power shift go bad but it was used for heavy tillage. Did have a 1270 shear off the 3 bolts that hold the clutch together but the mechanic put an updated clutch in with much bigger bolts in it. He said that was only in the 1270 because it used the same clutches as the smaller 70's and the 1370 and larger used bigger clutches.

We have a 1070 powershift i baled with a 605 C and just left it in 3rd gear and went right along didn't shift the powershift. when you have a load press on the brake and then shift down. the powershifts aren't that expensive if taken care of. Dad rebuilt the powershift before i was born sometime in the 80's and its still working good.

A powershift trans is great and dependable if taken care of. As far as being exspensive to fix they arnt the cheapest to fix. But i hear the stories of 4000 to 6500 thats BS we do them for less than that most of the time and replace every thing that is worn more than 75%. What you get is a dealer who charges 50 bucks a hour and loves to sell every thing he can new at full list. Plus do they want you to fix that old one or buy that nice new Mc Cormick or what ever they call those things. just my thoughts

I used a 2090 Case (with powershift) for 4 years with an 851 and a 650 NH round baler. Really liked baling with it. Didn't seem to cause any transmission problems. That said the powershift units on these are VERY expensive to repair (one reason the units are so cheap). I sold my 2090 b/c of it. My best friend has a 2090 and a 1070. In one year he had to put 8000 in the 2090 and then two weeks later irrigating tobacco a little speck of dirt went through the hydraulic system. Pressure dropped allowing PTO clutch to uncouple. As soon as the dirt cleared clutches recoupled (valves had not reseated, this took less than 3 seconds) with 2 miles of water in 6" pipe. Did 12,000 to the unit. In a month he put 20,000 in a 10,000 tractor. Not something I wanted to keep.

All the 70 series are powershift! It should be fine for bailing. They are really quite reliable and stand a lot of torque for a long time. I have a 1370 for field work - like pulling 30 feet of cultivator. No problems, but I've been told to keep the under-load shifting to a minimum.

No the 70 series are not all powershifts. I own a 970 with a standard 8-speed. I believe the 770-1070s were all available with standard or powershift, and the 1175 was only standard. I would much prefer the powershifts though, the standards are crude shifting.
