Anybody know what year Case SC switched from a 6 spoke steering wheel to a 3 spoke?

Back when we farmed with the SC's 46, 48, two 49's, the spokes were black on the newer ones and FB on the 46. All the 48 and 49's came from the factory that way. The choke was black with the silver C in it.
Thanks.

I have two 1947 S C Case's and they have the three spoke wheel. I think this was the first year for it. Thanks

Elliott,
On your 47 SC can you tell the orginal spoke color. My 49 3-spoke was black I think.
What about the choke knob?

Randy I looked at the S C Cases this morn and it is black on my steering wheel I think. My chock is rust all rust. Sorry but that all I can tell.

Hey Randy,

While we wait for an answer to your question- here's a 3-spoke photo to look at. (link below)

Here's all that I know about it- my '45SC has the 6-spoke wheel, and my '49SC has the 3-spoke wheel. We will have to narrow the year down from there.

If I may ask a sub-question to your main question... what color is the steering wheel supposed to be painted? In the various books I've seen them painted both ways- Flambeau spokes or painted all black.

(p.s. - tell me more about this axle hub key you mentioned below. I don't understand it from your description.)

Mike,
I was looking at an original S series operations manual with the number “Form 5289 15M 8-48” to address your question on wheel color.
I never noticed it before but the first two pictures in the book show a standard SC with 3-spoke wheel and a SC with adjustable wide front end with a 6-spoke wheel. From the shading, I think the 6-spoke wheel has Flambeau spokes and the 3-spoke has black spokes. How about that?
On the rear axle key. Each real axle is keyed in place by a square key that locks the hub to the axle. Originally, the key had a ¼” pin installed about an inch from one end. The key is installed in the hub before sliding it on the axle by aligning the key and pin to a hole in the hub.
The one I installed first had that pin removed and when I went to install the other side I found the pin. It would have been obvious I think if I had picked up the one with the pin first and had it not had a chunk of grease covering the pin.
Now I am trying to find out the color of the choke knob. On another list, it was suggested it had been plated.
How many SCs do you have?

According to the archives when we went through this before, the consensus was that the SC changed from the 6-spoke wheel to the 3-spoke wheel in 1947, or at least definitely by 1948.

The votes for spoke color have all been for Flambeau, too.

Regards, -Schotte

I am thinking 6-spokes were Flambeau and 3-spokes are black.

Hi Randy,

If your theory is true... then it looks like I biffed it on my paint job in the photo.

If it's any consolation, the Franklin Mint thinks it's supposed to be Flambeau! (grin)

To answer your question- I have (3) SCs. One '49 weekly driver, and two parts/project tractors that I picked up at auction in early November. One is another '49 and one is a '45. I've also got a '49 DC-3 project tractor.... so I really can't decide who's next in line to be worked on! Maybe I should just soak 'em all and pick whoever unsticks first??

I just posted pics of all 3 project tractors to the YTMAG photos in case you're interested. The link to the '45 is listed below.

Both of the parts SCs have good steering wheels, but neither the 3-spoke or the 6-spoke wheel have any paint left on them to look at.

I'll look at the choke knob next time I'm out there- but I think mine is currently "rust" colored. Previous posts said black with a silver "C"- and that sounds reasonable to me.

Wow, a real tractor graveyatd there, how I envy you. Looks like you've got some projects to keep you out of the kitchen for the next few years.

Found this an interesting conversation because I'm right in the middle of working on my 49 LA. Hopefully this info applies somewhat. My steering wheel is 4 spoke (19 7/8" dia) & the spokes & hub are black. The post is Flambeau. I can tell the paint most places(this was under roof its whole life). Such as the black stripes on the radiator cap. I just ordered a light switch yesterday from Case & don't know what I'll get for a knob(mine is gone & they could not tell me). My 7/8" dia choke knob says 'choke' on it. No paint left on it unfortunately. Black sounds good to me. Does anyone know what color the exposed metal on the gages(temp, oil, amp) is supposed to be?
Thanks
Steve

Steve the best I can tell is the edge of the gages are black on my 49 SC. Also, in my operation manual the picture would lead me to believe that is correct. Ok you have me on the black stripes on the radiator Cap. Where do they go? Do you have a picture?

Randy,
Unfortunatly I don't have a picture. Pretty sure you have the 'winged' radiator cap like me. The LA cap has 2 black stripes on each side of the wing starting at the rounded part of the cap & running to the end of the wing. They are 1/8" wide & equally spaced from the top & bottom of the wing & from each other. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info on the gages.
Steve

I have a 43 SC with a 3 spoke steering wheel. It might not be the original though- I know my great grandfather replaced this tractor's original steel rims with rubber.
