1954 DC Case rear end oil

I drained the rear end oil. It was full of water and sludge. I need to know how to replace the oil. Where to put it in? What kind of oil? And, how much do I use? I would really appreciate any advice on this matter that anyone can give me. Thanks!

A couple of points are cleaning the gunj out and were the water is coming from. I drain the old fluid out and refill with diesel fuel and drive it for a couple of min. and drain again. You'll be supprised at the junk you'll get out.The other point stop the water from coming in or else your just wasteing your time. The biggest spot the water is entering is around the gear shifter. Make sure you have a good boot.

Mark: There are two reservoirs (assuming you have a live PTO and Eagle Hitch. The Transmission/differential takes about 10 gals of 90w (Some people use 85-140 I don't see that that would be a problem) Be very careful about additives, you have a wet clutch!! (Most of the miracle cures in the fine print warn about use with a wet clutch. The second reservoir is for the PTO and Hydraulic pump. Gets a little more interesting here. Original called for 10w. But later versions of the PTO clutches have different surfaces and there was a change order that specifies Type A ATF (which is Dexron). In any event takes about 10 quarts. There are two separate fill points..both unde rthe seat the forward (and larger one is for the Trans/diff (even though it looks like it goes into the PTO) the rearward smaller one is for the PTO. BE VERY careful it is easy to get mixed up... I did...not one of my better days.
There are two drains for the trans/diff.
There are small pipe plugs on the side of the Tran and the rear of the PTO housing. You fill them until it runs out of the small pipe plug holes.

You don't have to worry about the wet clutch when changing trans. oil. The main clutch runs in engine oil, and the PTO clutch (if you have one) runs in the hyd. oil. Don't worry about all the chatter about hyd. oil. Use a good grade of 20 wt hyd. oil and it will work fine. I use the JD 20 wt hyd. oil and it works fine for me. I like it a lot better than the 10 wt stuff that Case IH has. If you like the oil that Case had before the merger you can get that from the Case construction dealer. If you use your tractor in the winter you might want 80 W 90. The 140 gets kinda stiff below 20 degrees. Good luck!
