Last summer my DB 1200 quit charging and while not running it will run the battery down overnight. I am thinking this might be the voltage regulator under the dashboard. I replaced the generator two years ago but a mechanic says I should take the generator off and check it out before replacing the voltage regulator. I don't suspect the generator as much because it runs the battery down when it is turned off. should I take his advice or just go for a new regulator? I understand they are real pricey.

This is a generator right! not an alternator. On a generator almost the only thing that could kill the battery overnight would be the cutout stuck shut. ( it's a part of the regulator). Take the fan belt off and, with a charged battery in it see if the generator is trying to motor. (you may ve to spin it by hand to tell). If it is , then for sure the problem is in the regulator.

Convert it over to a Delco alternator.

Amen to that, Elmer, I did our 990 and 1200 5 years ago and it was the best thing I ever did to those tractors. So nice to hit the key and know it's going to rollover for you!!

The generator only put up about 15 amps at best and when using the tractor to blow the laneway out it barely charges the battery up after a cold start. The alternator will put up 43 and does the job just fine.

My 1290 did the same thing. I had to take it apart and install new brushes on the alternator. If you operate your tractor in a lot of dust, look for alternator trouble.
