Hi,
I Have a 1938 Case C Orchard tractor. I have partialy restored it and last summer put probaly 40 hours on it(It was pressed back in to service as we lost one of our more modern tractors to an incident envolving vandals). It worked quite well for farm duty suprisingly, except for one problem with the trans that prehaps some readers of the board could help me figure out. When shifting out of 3rd gear the shifter will lock up, seems to be in nutral postion, but realy is in 1st gear. All the wrestling with the shifter is useless, unless you drive the tractor around and keep wrestling with it, and eventualy It it will free up. It only does it when coming out of 3rd. You can use 1st, 2nd, reverse all day and not have this happen. I am going to pull it apart next spring, but would like to know what to expect, so I'd appreciate hearing your thoughts if you have experence with this type of problem or you are just a arm-chair mechanic. Thanks, Kent Fedor

I once experienced a similar problem on LA. In addition it would sometimes select 2 gears at once.

The LA transmission is similar to the C. The LA problem was worm forks and sliders. It was an easy job, just have to remove the top of the gear box to replace worn parts.

Parts were readily available back then (1960s). I suspect they will be difficult to get now, but a good workshop shuld be able to build them up (maybe spray on metal) and machine them to original.
