My hydralic system will lift (I only tried the bar with no serious weight on it) but then leaks down. I think it is one of the check balls which the parts and service manuals show as a 9/16 ball. The service manual suggest using a soft rod to rap the ball back into seating and then to replace the ball. Does anyone know what the composition of the seat is? My thoughts were that it might be hard metal and that I might be better off with using a ball file to smooth the surface, however I have not yet been able to find a file. Any help in understanding the design of the seat or in finding a file would be greatly appreciated. If this is the wrong approach please let me know.

go ahead and give it a tap. A-C had a valve like that on the WD series , I would say the seat is pretty soft,no more than mild steel. If you file on it you will just get filings inside.
