I have a Case 440 that's making a lot of noise when the foot clutch is depressed. It sounds like it's not all the way out of gear when I try to shift. The hand clutch works. I need some information as how to adjust the foot clutch. There appears to be a hole in the transmission- clutch case to allow the use of a tool to adjust the clutch. Any info at all would be appreciated.

Hi, My 540 doesn't have the hand clutch but I'm sure its a seperate unit from the main clutch. My main clutch is similar to a car clutch. The only adjustment is the free-travel between the fork and throw-out bearing. (the clevis and rod near the clutch pedal). Mine has a terrible sounding rattle when I turn the engine off with the clutch depressed. As far as I know its normal. The throw-out bearing is installed backwards to a car. It spins with the pressure plate (If you have the early style like mine). I guess your noise could be a bad throw-out bearing but since its also hard to shift maybe pilot bearing in end of crankshaft is dragging and squeeling? Dennis...

Ditto to what Dennis said. I have a 530 with no hand clutch but a foot clutch. Likewise, it has rattled and made a racket for close to 20 years. When I depress the clutch or shut the tractor off with the clutch depressed it sounds like little men are inside the housing with hammers, (I guess it could be little women too). Never has given me any problem though
