I have the opportunity to buy a Case 430 (SN8239927). I think it is a 1964 Model. I should be able to buy for around $2500. Good sheet metal, tires. It has a Tripl Range trans. Questions: Any things I should look for? Does it have live PTO and HYD?

Thanks!

That is a good deal if the tractor is in good shape. I would also check three other things. Make sure the differential seals are not leaking into the brakes. You can tell this if oil is leaking out of the brake covers. Also check the oil level in the rear end to see if there is too much. If there is, there could be a leaky lift cylinder allowing hydraulic oil to be forced out into the rear end and rear transmission. Also there is a seal in the front of the rear transmission which will go bad and let hydraulic oil into the rear transmission. This type of leak would be the most expensive to fix , seperating the tractor, removing gears, etc. My guess would be that a leak into the rear would most likely be from the lift piston which is not a big deal to fix. Also the differential seals is not that hard to fix either. Also, I forgot to mention, The 430 is a great little tractor.

It has live PTO and HYD. I has a hand clutch and foot clutch. Hand clutch can be used to keep the PTO live but slow speed of tractor. Sounds like a good price. The 188 diesel is one of the best. Look for oil in the water or signs of a head gasket blown, or ask the owner if a head gasket problem has occured. Case had a problem with its blocks prior to s/n 8262800. See this problem in Case Forum Archives, sorted by Author, find Richard Early "530 head gasket". My situation got expensive, but I have ended up with a great tractor, and by the way the 188 engine is extremely fuel efficient.
