You can switch to 12 volts and keep the same generator. What needs to be changed is the cutout relay that mounts on the top of the generator. 12 volts will fry the coil in it. I replaced the relay with a 40 amp diode from a surplus equipment dealer. The ignition needs either a resistor to drop 12 to 6 or replace the coil with a 12 volt one which does not need an external resistor. The guys are correct that there is really no need to switch to 12 if you keep everything in good working order with 6. A poor cable or connection with 6 volts is a problem. If your vac has lights then the three position switch that turns the lights on will cause the generator to charge very strong. I rewired my lights through a separate switch and do not use that high charge switch position. Of course all the lamps were replaced with 12 volt ones. Keep it tuned up as the starter will overheat if you grind on it very long. Remember that double voltage causes double current resulting in 4 times the power (heat). Good Luck.

Why change? If it won't start on 6v you got other problems.

If you do a search on this page then go to the right to search this site and choose the entire site option on 12V conversions. You should find a multitude of info in the archives. I used a Delco alternator, the voltage regulator is built in had to change pulley, also used a diode, to isolate the feed back out of the alternator, and ignition resistor, to drop the 12V to 6V for the coil. Rewired and saved all old parts including wiring harness encase I ever wanted to put back to original. There are several ways of doing it including spending big bucks to have the generator rewired for 12V so it will look original.

Is there any special reason you want to make the switch? I found this by digging around on this site. Maybe it would help.
