Saw an ad for a 1979 Case MB4/94 in the local
paper. Before I call can someone tell me about
this model as I have never heard of it or can
find any info. Must be big as the price is $15K.
I'm looking for a tractor with 70hp for my new
farm and am wondering if this would fill the bill.
Thanks from Larry in PA.

talked to a man today. he has fixed more Unimogs than anyone in the country. He says the value of a Case style Unimog is $2500 on the bottom end. What gets me it has a 90 inch wheel base wich is tiny. He did a full brake job and clutch on one the bill was over $20,000. There are a flood of Unimogs military surplus and the market.

Here in Denmark they use Unimogs as tow-trucks, and if we get stuck in a field with a tractor, then the rescuepeople will come out with the Unimog and pull us out. If it is to muddy or soft
grond and the Unimog canīt go there, the only way
to solve the problem is to use a tracktype tractor. In Germany farmers use the Unimog for
fieldwork. I have seen one pulling a 6-buttom
moldboard plow.

Mean Gene the fightin machine.
It would be a real boy-toy to have one of them! It would like Ted Nugent coming over in his Hummer vechicle with a couple of chicks, a full tank of fuel, with a couple cases of good Aussie beer. [don't tell my wife]
Just a thought..... ,no harm done.

Larry what you've come across is a Mercedes-Benz
Unimog 406. It is a cross between a farm tractor
and a truck. Case and MB had a deal in the late
70s and early 80s to market the Unimog to farm,
commerical and municipal users. Case designed a
special body known as a Case deck to which a 3pt
hitch and 2 or 3 different standard backhoes
would mount. It was painted with Case Industrial
Yellow with a Case MB 4/94 decal on the side. The
units were low production and profit so the deal
ended quickly and Case and IHC got hitched around
that time. The price of 15K is low if it's in good shape and if there is a backhoe with the deal, it's a real good deal. I doubt it would be
what your looking for, but it can do anything a
farm tractor can and still go down the road at
48mph. Go take a look and talk to the owner to
get more information, maybe you'll like it. I use
one on my farm for many different jobs and like
it. Good luck, Unimog.

Went to see the Case Unimog this AM. What a great
machine! Owner says it's got 20 spd forward and
8 reverse, front, mid and rear hydraulics, front
and rear PTO, air lock differentials, built in
air compressor, 3-pt hitch and the list goes on
and on. No backhoe with it but says it would take
the same backhoe as on regular Case backhoes of
that time. Unimog is yours like this one? I would
love to get it but don't know if it would suit my
needs. Unbelievable machine.

The Case Unimog came with the 20 speed transmission, deisel only of course. I don't think you could get any other transmission from Case. The back hoe that fits these units is the one that fit the 480C. Thats the one with the single boom cylinder, not the double boom cylinder model that was used on the 580C. They had a really strange front loader. It was really close coupled, but pretty much full featured.

Larry, yes mine has all those options but it is
not a Case unit. I'm not sure what Case offered
in transmissions but Unimogs of this type come
with either 6,8,20,24 or a torque converter. The
PTO can be 540 or 540/1000. Front and rear 3-pt
is an option. It has the Mercedes OM352 6 cyl.
diesel rated at 84hp which can be run at full
all day long with no pboblem. Mine has a dumpbody
with fold down sides that dumps in 3 directions
and has a 2-ton capacity. Great machine and a
real eyecatcher at truck or tractor shows. The
fun thing about owning one is hanging the NH 57
hay rake on the 3-pt and zipping thur town to the
diner. The looks you get are priceless.

They also had two different transmissions available, a 12 speed and a 24 speed. THe 24 speed had a super low range where the travel speed was measured in feet per minute. When I worked at CPE I checked on the price of one and it started out at $15,000 and that was in 79. I was trying to talk the store manager into getting one of these for a service truck so that I could get out to the broken down machines easier. These units could be had with either a soft top or a hard top. The only problem I ever heard about these was that they had valve problems. As far as the basic design though, these units were designed as tractors for the low top speed wasn't that important. Rumor had it that these units were banned from 4-wheel drive events do to the lack of competetive units.

Max, that super low is so slow you you have to
really look hard to see the machine moving. I've
never heard much about valve trouble with the
OM352. Mercedes used this engine in many trucks
over the years and even put a turbo on it and
called it the OM 352A. Unimogs come in all shapes
and sizes. The older gas units are very popular
with the offroaders and yes are sometimes banned
from competition because there is no real equal
competitor. They use Unimogs to pull the Hummers
out.

Since you all are talking about field vehicles, Kaiser Jeeps are also field worthy. I am talking before 71. I have a 61. From the factory jeep offered, 3 point hitch, 2 bottom plow, cultivators, Rear Pto, and they had a backhoe option, Wrecker option, Dozer option, fire truck. Sorry, I am just really into jeeps.
