Years ago I spent 14 bucks for a factory leather seal and it lasted about a dozen strokes so I used an inch and a half brake cylinder cup for 50- cents....bought a bunch of them and eventually discovered that:
-ATF eats them up real quick....use 5-30 motor oil or so if you live in the cold belt ,10w if you don't.
-By taking the end off the cylinder, unhooking the ram from the center-lift, pulling out the worn out seal and replacing it with another ON THE TRACTOR I can change one in about 10 minutes. With the cylinder open end as close to vertical as possible you can fill it to overflowing with fresh oil and slip the new cup in sideways and then right it below the surface of the oil; this eliminates air in the system.
-I've found that the length of service for these cups depends on the load you're lifting and maybe the speed of the up/down cycles.
-I believe that the best setup is turning a scraper/o-ring groove in the old ram and then getting a repair kit for a 1 1/2 inch cylinder and using what you need from that.
