Hello & Merry Christmas and a happy New Year to all. Help Request!! Running a 8 volt battery, Took generator to a reputable repair shop for rebuild and had it double checked, and confirmed gen. is working properly. Ran new wires from gen. to a brand new volt. regulator, followed elec. checks per instructions w/new regulator, but when I polarize the reg. I do not get a spark when jumping batt. to arm. posts. Have new heavy duty battery cables, with contact areas cleaned & elec. grease applied. Amp gage shows a proper amount of discharge when load is applied to system, but when tractor is running at 1/2 throttle or more, still shows zero to very slight discharge on amp. gage. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank You in advance. C.D. Zook

C D I also had a 8 volt battery in my 1957 310 gas (6 volt system). I was told by a local tractor dealer to just use a good 6 volt battery. I installed one and have no problems since. It starts right up even at 0 degrees F.

Thank you for the responses, but I am still puzzled about no spark present, when I attempt to polarize the new regulator. I am aware that the regulator & generator may have to be tweaked by the elec. repair shop, to compensate for the 6 volt verses the 8 volt battery. I will call them to see about having this done, if possible to set up the voltage, or not. Thanks, C.D.Z.

Casepoor is about right except that if I remember right, I think that you can tweek the original 6v. regulator till it puts out 8 volts. Course maybe my memory ain't too swell either.;^) My dad did an M farmall that way back in the sixty's and it worked great. Somebody correct me, but did they even make an 8v. regulator?

I too had once put an 8 volt battery in my 311,,, didnt work, it was a 6 volt system then,, the generator has to put out 8volts,,, it only put out 6.2 volts, converted to 12 volts after that, GL.

C.D unless you are just wanting to leave the orginial charing system on the machine i would change it over to 12 voilts.GM alternator with built in regulator you will have to make a new bracket to mount the alternator.and if it is gas you will have to have a resester in line to cut power to 6 volts at the points.
