I have two six volt batteries in series on my 1978 Case 580 C. I have been having problems with them holding a charge. Can I install one twelve volt battery instead of the two six volt, would it work ?

I would try one twelve volt battery and if that was not satisfactory then get another twelve hooked up parallel. Won't cost much more and then if you get a bad connection on one it will go ahead and start at least in good weather. Then you have an extra battery for something else if you need it. I've changed over Cases, IHs, and JDs and am much happier. That's just my opinion and it's like other things, everybody's got one.

I agree, that when one battery is weak it will pull the other battery down. My brother was one who would charge and charge old batteries and think they would come back to like. I guess he didn't like to spend money for new batteries. I get two new batteries. I'd also pay attention the all the battery cables. With all that voltage going through them it must weaken the wire inside tha cables. Especially if you have had to use jumpers to start it many times. I'd go to the welding supply, get some welding cable, get solder on ends, and make new cables. Sometime this was time consuming, but it's just a piece of the puzzle you won't have to worry about. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year, Phil

Don't really remember any 580C's having a single 12 volt battery, only the 580D had one and was it ever a bear to get to. The 1978's 580C's had the Delco starter and if yours still has the Delco, you will want the extra cranking power of the 2 six volts when it get below 50 degrees F outside. If your 580C has the Nympho starter, then you could get away with a good group 30 battery but I don't think it will fit in the battery box. A group 27 may fit but those batteries just don't seem to have the lasting power of the group 30 when cranking during a cold morning. Hope this helps.

if you got 1 weak one it will ruin the other after awhile. then if you replace one if the other isnt as hot as the new one after awhile 1 of them goes KAPUT so really you should put 2 new ones in, but im sure somebody wont agree to that . so im putting in a diclaimer. but i have been around diesels for the last 27 years but it doesnt mean im right

Hi Greg,
Some 580Cs came from the factory with a single 12V (30H) battery. They have a different battery box, but I'd guess it would work. You'll be losing some cranking power by switching to a single 12V...But, I wonder if you'll be gaining anything? It seems if you have a draw or other charging problem, won't you still have a problem with the single 12V? Or are you just wanting a 12V because its cheaper than 2 6vs?
