i just tore into the motor of my latest project, an sc with a stuck motor, and the 2 front main caps are busted on one side right next to the bolt, the same side on both. the bolts had not backed out, and the crank looks ok. but what would cause them to bust like that? any ideas? thanks in advance.

Well my first thought would be maybe someone may have been pulling it and engaging the clutch fast to try to free the engine. Had the head been off before and someone pounding on the pistons to free them. Could be other possibilities such as someone prying to hard, bent crank at to high rpm,or any chance the crank case filled up with water and froze. Does it look like old break or new break????
