I have a 1951 DC-3

This tractor has had the magneto replaced with a AC Delco Distributor I assume off of a different model Case tractor. This has been converted to 12 volt only by replacing the generator with an alternator and changing the coil to 12V. I am not able to see a spark either between the points or using a screwdriver grounding against the block, however, a timing light verifies that a pulse is going through the wires. I am guessing that I have a very weak spark. I have replaced the condensor, and the coil (12 Volt)and still cannot physically see a spark when testing it (on any cylinder). Does anyone know of an electronic ignition I could put on this tractor or have any ideas as to why I am getting a terrible spark? Wanna sell me a magneto?

Thanks for any help.

Chris

First check that you have 12 volts at the + side of the coil when the ign is on. Second, check that the points are operating correctly and that nothing is touching the distributor frame such as te condender lead or the wire where it goes through the hole in the distributor. If that is all ok take the coil lead out of the dist cap (so it is still in the coil) and hold near a ground while cranking. You should have a spark there for EVERY cylinder. If not check the coil wire. If so, you should have spark at the plugs unless you have some weird problem with the rotor or cap.

Check to see if there is a resistor in the line to the coil. A lot of conversions to 12 volt were done this way. If you are using a 12 volt coil with the resistor it would produce a very weak spark.
