I am thinking of building a smoker tractor for pulling and I am thinking about building a 970 Case. No one pulls any Case's around my area but I see them on the internet for sale so I know people pull them. Anyway everyone tells me to go with the 4020. What do you all say? I think the 970 would probably be the better puller but I'm not sure

Build the 970 it would out do the 4020 and for the JD people im not trying to start a color war. You should be able to get lots of power from the 401 depends on how wild you want to go and how much you want to spend. I have a case 4 cyl right now and im getting 200 and havent done even got a big enough turbo on it yet. Take the 401 out and put in a 504 then power is no problem that is if you can get away with it. Good luck Thad

I have heard of a 1370 that turns 300 hp, it's only used for tractor pulling. As for hp on stock tractorsour 2090 runs 140 [I turned the fuel 1 turn, it went from 118 two 140] my brothers 1170 runs 170 ,my 2290 4+4 was sent from Case running 180,the 1070 runs 120 it still has it seal on the pump, the same goes for the 870 runs 85 . A friend of mine has a 1370 that has been reworked in to a Supper Stock Puller/ the fuel pump looks like the ones found on a Mack truck, and a large Turbo,There is another guy that has a 1170 super stock, top RPM is 5000, much over that a Blows Apart, he had to go with a dubble disk Clutch . Stay away from the Green They Fall apart with out any help!

Hey, Your getting 200 hp or what are you getting? If its 200 hp then WOW Beacase thats like a 1570 with a 504 stock. Our 1070 with a 451 is only pushing 140. I don't know if you made a typeing error or not. I don't mean this to make you mad or anything i was just shocked thats all. And by the way of case vs jd well i would pull with the case because i think the engines are better bulit just my opion all you jd fans and you don't see to many people pulling with them as far as making more hp how much you want to spend what class and what are the rules.

Just wondering how you squeezed 140 horse out of that 1070. We run several of them and 140 horse seems too much for the rear end. Would think a 1270 or larger would be a better idea since they are heavier and could use all that horse, or is this a pullin tractor?

Its not a pulling tractor. someone had turned the pump up and put a junk turbo on it when got it. Then my uncle had a turbo off of his 1570 he said we could have and we put that on there. So far its been doing fine we have used it forevery thing. Runs great when started. Has alot of blow by. And the neat thing is its a 1070 blackknight. its been over 10 years since we had it. and not a thing has gone wrong except the power steering and brake thing up under the hood. Thanks

Glad to hear another rock solid Case has held up well. Yeah we had one of those brake units go bad, or so we thought. It turned out to be really small metal shavings wedging in the cylinders and causing the brakes to lock up when applied. The shavings came from the torque ring and the fly wheel. Had a grove wore in it 1/2 inch deep, not good. Replaced it and haven't had a problem since. Still scares me to see that much horse out of a 1070! Have a good day, Shane.

I don't know about you guys; I've got an 870; great tractor, but at 200HP, and 3400 RPM I don't know that it would hold together. You must have done some balancing? What about the balancer? How do you hold the transmission and axles together? I twisted an axle on mine, not sure why, but I have some ideas. John

Yes 200 is correct yes its a 870 eng. Lots of pump work lines and injectors. I only have a small TO4 on it for a turbo makes lots of fire and smoke needs more air. Then i expect more HP as well.

I've read the dyno when we put an 870 that had had a bunch of pump work and turned 3400 RPM. With no turbo it pushed 180 hp.
