Got a 1410, 400 hrs on engine. Started it day before yesterday (been down in the single didgets). Used cold start button on pump. Started right up (always did start easy). When it hit it banged and thrashed like always then when it ran up to throttle before the governor backed it off it backfired. Now its running sick, have a definite compression leak, knock. Can feel back pressure on the intake with the breather pulled, feel it on 1 compression stroke. Any ideas? Wanted to think blown head gasket but (smell antifreeze burning) cant explain the compression leak. Bent valve? Any ideas? I'm pulling the head tomorrow.

Could have warped a valve since its been cold are you running a muffler?? Did you say you can smell antifreeze or not.

Yes, got a muffler on. Think I smell anitfreeze burning. Got an odor I can't place. I like the warped valve idea, with maybe a blown head gasket.

They are more prone to bending a push rod in situations like that. Check all your push rods before pulling the head. Plus make sure the cold start pin did kick back out when it rev'd up. Burning anti freeze has a sweet smell to it.

Elmer,

You were right (as usual :)). Both push rods bent on #4. I'm pulling the oil pan and piston, now.

Just want to see how bad it is (bent rod or broken rings). Any thoughts? Lots of carbon on top of the piston. Walls look ok down about a 1/4" lots of carbon and scratches at the top, that hurt anything?

I don't imagine there will be anything wrong with the piston. The carbon on the cylinder wall is above the top ring. I would put in two push rods adjust valves and run it.

Maybe you better pull the injector and turn the engine over to make sure it was not anti freeze that hit the valves and bent the push rods. If there is anti freeze in there it will spray out when you turn the engine with the starter.

Went ahead and pulled the head and piston. Head appears alright, piston wasn't. Second compression ring was stuck good. Huge mess in there. I guess with both valves closed and it still pumping fuel in there. Exhaust hole in the head was filled with (engine) oil, not sure where that came from. Sent them to the machine shop for a check up. I'll keep you posted, thanks again for the help.
