What is a running model S worth? What should I look for, or look out for?

I'm looking at this tractor and at a DC.

The S' tires are bad, but hold air. The guy says "everything works" and it starts right up. The paint is the wrong color, but the pics make it look pretty good. I really like the looks of the standard S and figure it would be easier to haul around on a trailer. Plus, Dad wants one cause that's what he ran as a kid.

Any suggestion or input would be appreciated. Thanks.

dbb62; Caseman is right on what to look for. It could be worth anywhere from $250. to $1200. What year is it? Live Hyd. & PTO? CASE magneto? Original 6 volt system or cobbed to 12 volt? Tires all the way around I will estimate to cost@ $700. Hope this helps. John

Buy the DC for yourself then buy the S for your dad and tell him it's an early father's day gift. He would love it.
Look in the radiator for excess rust, water or anti-freeze in the oil, give it a test drive and listen for unusual noises, check oil pressyre after they have been warmed up. Both the DC and S are great tractors. If dad doesn't want the S let me know where it's at :):).

HE's asking $1450, which seemed awful high to me. It does look pretty nice though. I asked him if the brakes work, and if it had live pto or hydraulics. Haven't heard back yet. It's a '48 model.
