I have had a late 80's case backhoe for a couple of years now and it has been great in all aspects. However, just lately, i have been having some trouble with starting it. as you probably know -there is a neutral switch that does not allow you to start it while in gear. The problem is a bit abstract in that we have replaced the ignition switch and the neutral switch and still, when you turn the key all the way to "start" position, sometimes it just starts up, but other times it does nothing.(like there is no connection). once we had the key in the start position fora whole minute and all of the sudden, something made a connection, and the starter started spinning and it started, it does make a little noise when nothing happens (very quiet and deffinately not the starter)-it is very frustrating and i would very much appreciate any ideas or feedback -thanks,
Brian

I have a 1986 580e - I had the same exact symptoms after trying several things I learned it was the battery ground cable. The improper ground makes it have a faulty connection. Replace the ground cable with a heavier gauge cable and ground it to more solid location. I did this and it completely solved the problem.

I have the same problem on my machine. I have found it to be the safety switch. What I do is with the key in the off position quikly move the foward and reverse lever back and forth. It usually take only a few times and mine starts up every time.

sound like the solenoid switch is getting bad on starter itself. Is that a Delco starter?
