I have been talking to one of the fellow members of this website about purchasing his 1961 Case 930. The engine is not running right now and will require some work, I believe he said it spun a bearing. It is also missing the front grill.

My question to the more knowledged than myself is, "What are some of the major concerns that I should inspect prior to purchasing this tractor?" Are there any problem areas on the 930 that should be closely inspected?

Any help you can provide is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

TXSteven; I have one of those, they were a great tractor in their time. I don't know how much you know about the '61 "930". The chassis design dates back to 1929 to the "L". The '61 is chain drive so I'd look underneath for a patched hole to see if she ever stuffed a chain through the housing. That is not to say that the drive train isn't durable cause it is. I've seen the ring & pinion on the clutch shaft go bad. As for the engine, rebuild kits are more plentiful for the 401 engine in the "930" than the later 401 BD. The cranks are super tough, so I'd worry more about block damage with the spun bearing than crank damage. A ballpark figure on a complete engine kit; gaskets, sleeves, pistons, rings, pins & rod & main brgs. would be about $1250. But of course the shop work is extra and expensive. When I do a valve job on a diesel, I don't cut corners, new valves & seats; it assures easier starting. Good luck, John

Thanks for the advice. I have been reading in "Old Abe's News" that was provided to me by a friend about the 900 and 930. I wasn't exactly sure if the 61 was chain drive or not.
