Can someone give me an overview of the operational characteristics of the 70 series powershift transmission? Am I correct in assuming it has more in common with the jd quad range than powershift? thanks, howard s.

Hi Howard. A case powershift is better copared to a JohnDeere power quad. The Case powershift has four speeds with three powershifts in each "range". On my 970, an older one, I have only three reverse speeds as fourth is blocked out. A worn powershift will usally be VERY jumpy. Start up the tractor and with the range in netural, shift the powershift and watch the pressure gauge on the dashboard. It should flicker quickly into the red zone, and then back to green. The slower the gauge moves the more tired it is. I have my Case dealer check my powershift pressure yearly. It prevents problems and detects leaks in the shift packs. Hope this helps. I have clocked about 3000hrs on my 970 and have no problems. It now has 7200hrs on the tractor and never tore down.

I'm going to do something here I don't like to do and talk about something I don't know much about (quad range??) The 70 series uses the same basic powershift as the other Cases (90 and 96's series). Set of hydraulic clutches let you powershift 1-3 in any of 4 manual gear ranges. Uses a compound planetary gear set for the powershift and a regular unsynchonized transmission in the gear case.

No, I have never operated one, that's why I asked the question. I have owned a jd 4430(quad range) for 14 years, and am interested in buying a 70 series case as a second tractor. It sounds to me as though the case tranny is similar to the quad, which is fine with me, because the jd 20-40 series powershifts aren't anything to brag about. By the way, I have owned two of those(4640, 4840), too. Thanks, HOWARD S.

the 70 series trans has a 4 speed range trans with a 3 speed powershift which gives a total of 12 speeds fwd and 4 in reverse the jd quad{ if i remember right}is a 4 speed range with speed main and a 2 speed splitter which gives you 16 fwd and 6 reverse the jd powershift is a true powershift

The Case powershifts should have only 3 reverse speeds. 4th is blocked out.

I believe there were some with a reverse in 4th also. I think they were the early ones.

But there really isn't any reason to have a 4th gear reverse. I personally like to drive forwards. ;-) ok i am not tring to start a fight just trying to lighten things up abit.

Howard; How much do you know about the CASE powershift? Have you ever operated one?
