Book says 140 non-diesel, 455 diesel. The non diesel is at cranking speed. Don't know if that is operating temp or not, sorry. That's out of I&T manual.

I dumped a little oil in the cylinders and that brout it right up to 140.My concern is that it was leaking oil out of the number one exhaust port yesterday. The plugs don't look all that great. Any suggestions?

I'm thinking if oil brought it up, then rings are the problem. If no change, then it's valves. Is there a bunch of smoke when it's running?

Theres no smoke out the exhaust or the crankcase breather and its about 5 degrees here and its starts like its 80.If it was rings the number one cylinder then it should have lower compression than the other 3 that aren't leaking oil shouldn't it? Would a dead plug factor in?

I'm getting all cross threaded here. John S seems pretty well versed in all this. Did you check compression in all 4 cylinders? If they are all fairly close then you're good. If a cylinder is low, then comes up with a squirt of oil, that should be rings. Anytime I've been around a bad valve, there was a definite miss when engine was running. What made you want to give it a compression test? I don't mean to waste your time here, bear with me.

I'm following you fellows, learning more about it as you go. S Heiserman is much too kind cause I'm not all that bright, but I have the same questions he does. When I have a missing engine I look at tune up, wires especially, if they are not copper core, get copper core on there. Put a warmer plug in than the spark plug book calls for. Of course points, cond. cap & rotor are important. When I check compression, all the plugs come out and the throttle goes wide open to insure maximum air to the cylender. The leakage from the cyl. port you described could be unburnt fuel from the cyl. not firing due to one of the afore mentioned electrical items not working. Hope this helps, Good luck John.
